Uncommon Mold Areas You Need to Check

Mold isn’t always visible, and a lot of homeowners have struggled with pinning down tough-to-reach areas. Sure, a good once-over might target dark areas, spotty ceilings and grimy corners, but mold might be growing in a few unpredictable areas. Before contacting your mold removal provider, cut down on inspection costs by checking these uncommon areas for big-time mold growth:

The Window

While windows are often exposed to dry air, they’re also exposed to humidity. Because of this, mold might accumulate around metal-framed and wood windows. If condensation tends to build up on your bottom level’s windows, you should check the window cracks for growth.

The Carpet

That’s right: The carpet can harbor unwanted mold, too. If your home has ever experienced water damage, you should get your carpet checked immediately. Mold can grow on a carpet’s underside, and it’s often hard to detect. That said, any lingering musty smell following leaks, floods or even spilled water should be inspected.

The Laundry Room

Laundry rooms, like kitchens, are “wet” areas. Water is continuously present here, creating an ideal environment for pesky mold growth. Always check behind, around and under your washing machine, and examine the floor for stains. Even if no standing water is present, water may gather beneath floorboards—and even between tile cracks.

The Air Ducts

Too many homeowners forgo air duct examination. While continuous air flow prevents stagnant water pools, air ducts can still be moist enough to grow mold. Because air flow, itself, spreads materials, locating any mold within them is vital. You don’t want mold spores tossed around your house, do you?

The Attic

Attics can become surprisingly humid. They’re already warmer than a house’s other areas. If you’re giving your home the mold sweep, don’t forget about the upper-deck crawlspace. Check the corners, and examine spots beneath insulation. While mold may not blatantly thrive in an attic space, it can certainly grow freely in tight areas.

If you find mold in any of the above places, take precautions before handing it. Remember to wear protective gear, including gloves, masks and long sleeves. If possible, contain the area. Mold spores spread easily, and they’ll take over a home’s other parts if you’re not careful. If you’re in doubt, contact your service provider. Rarely is a mold control beyond the expertise of a professional. Keep examining your house, be proactive about humidity upkeep and get routine mold check-ups.
