Mold that word you hear and it stops you in your tracks, but what is it and where did it come from?
Mold is a form of bacteria. It is a type of fungus that grows in damp areas, areas that never have a chance to totally dry out. Mold is typically found in damp building materials where it often appears like stains and comes in a variety of colors. Some molds are highly destructive but it is well known that all molds are unhealthy.
Mold requires moisture for growth.
The sources of moisture could be Washing, cooking, air humidifiers, condensation or leaks from plumbing or from the outside. Poor ventilation contributes to higher humidity levels and leads to condensation, which also allows mold growth.
Molds release small “spores” into the air. So, when mold grows indoors, the number of mold spores and fragments are usually higher indoors than it is outdoors. These spores are small enough that people can actually inhale them deep into the lungs. Inhalation of spores poses risk of developing respiratory problems.
There are many different types of mold
and as we mentioned earlier some are more destructive than others but there are really no mold types that are healthy in fact molds can pretty much be considered unhealthy.
A professional mold inspection company can do a complete assessment of all areas in your home and business. There are many sources of mold so it is important that any inspection company you hire have the experience and the tools necessary to do proper testing for sources of mold.
If the mold inspection company you hire is truly equipped with the right tools it shouldn’t take very long to determine if you have a mold problem and to what extent it has progressed. Typical tools include Hygrometers which the test for moisture content.
Once you have determined mold is an issue you have to have a remediation plan in place. Mold remediation is simply getting rid of the offending areas. You will have to start with Tearing out effected sheetrock, removing carpet etc. Drying the area and repairing the areas that allowed moisture in in the first place, this may include improving drainage, repairing leaks, and completing any repairs that were allowing moisture to build up in the first place.
